Biggie
Runaway consumer culture is the thematic backdrop for Biggie Drink: a sculptural installation consisting of a 3 ft. diameter lens of Coca-Cola, Formica, custom lighting, and 26 disassembled Biggie Drink cups from Wendy’s. The initial idea for this work came from a formal observation: holding a bottle of Coke up to the sunlight, its beautifully translucent amber-red color scascaded into the room around it. With this experience in mind,Coca-Cola became a physical material for art-making. The final combination of heat, Coca-Cola and epoxy resin, created an amalgam that hardened into a 15 lb. lozenge of crystallized Coca-Cola. Since the 1950’s, consumables in the United States have increased in size by 270%. Biggie Drink parodies the marketing trajectory for up-sizing. Re-contextualizing familiar mass products and their corresponding mass media elements has since become a cornerstone for SWAMP projects.
